Fly fishing season 2017 is ending
In Slovenia, the fly fishing season usually lasts from April 1st until the September 30th. The timing is due to the spawning-free period of brown and marble trout. In some rivers, you may even start earlier (already in March) and finish later in the fall.
One of the very interesting rivers, where one may fly fish in the late fall, is Savinja river (Fishing family Sempeter). If water levels are fine, then nymph and streamer fly fishing is very productive even in October or November.
Target fish species are of course rainbow trout and grayling. During sunny days, these silver knights are slowly rising to the surface. All smaller types of dry flies come in handy, whereas for rainbow trout anglers usually use streamers or large nymphs.
In case of a brown trout or huchen bite, please handle with them with extreme care. Brown trout are spawning and huchen is a totally different story – for huchen hunting, one needs a special licence and larger tackle.
